Factored into the decision to cancel were participant survey results, the low number of players, the health and safety requirements at each practice and game for each team and the concerns from many families. Based on all of that information, we do not believe that it is feasible for us to have a full contact, league sanctioned season this year. Aside from the obvious concern of the health and safety of all players, coaches and volunteers, with all the expectations and needed volunteers, the opportunity cost is not there for a successful season.
I want to give you a brief rundown of the discussion the board has had over the past few weeks so you may be able to understand why we have come to this conclusion. If you want anything more specific, please reach out and ask.
In terms of the list of health and safety precautions required, it would not only be a huge time commitment, it would also be expensive for the organization. Additionally, since the NHIAA has pushed out high school sports until at least September 8th, another factor was the likelihood of a shortened season in which we would play as little as 4-5 games. Traveling to other towns and out of state for games and having those teams come to Amherst was also a big concern for many families. From a financial perspective, we were concerned that if we have another outbreak and the remainder of the season was canceled, we would be unable to recoup what had already been spent. Our low number of volunteers was a concern as triple the amount would be required this year and lastly if the player numbers remain as low as they are and kids were to get sick in any way that presents a safety concern for the rest of the kids playing.
I can assure you that personally, none of us wanted to make this decision but we recognize the responsibility we have taken on as board members and coaches and truly want to do what is best for the participants and the organization as a whole. We hope to come back next year stronger than ever with a lot of lessons learned. Our goal is to put on some weekend clinics or an in town league this fall. Information on that will be forthcoming.
As always please reach out to any board members with any questions, concerns or frustrations.
